When Can I Get Medicare Supplements Plans?│Covered California Enrollment Center

Will I be able to get a Medicare Supplement Plan at any time?

For Medicare Supplement plans there are not any specific timeframes that you must enroll. You can apply for a Medicare Supplement plan at any time, but there are specific enrollment periods to enroll without any restrictions. Other types of Medicare plans like Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription drug plans (PDP) have annual enrollment periods that happen every fall. But for Medicare Supplement you usually will only have one enrollment period for unrestricted enrollment.

When is it possible to enroll into a Medicare Supplement plan?

The most opportune time to enroll into a Medicare Supplement plan is during the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. This time is for the first six months that you are first eligible for Medicare when you turn 65 or start being enrolled into Medicare Part A and Part B.

This time frame is very important. The reason is that the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period only happens once, during the time frame when you initially become eligible for Medicare. During the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period you are able to apply for a Medicare Supplement plan without any underwriting. This means the insurance company is not allowed to decline your enrollment or increase your monthly premiums based on your pre-existing health conditions. You will get the same rate as somebody who is in ideal health at the same age.  Once this time frame has expired then if you apply for a Medicare Supplement plan then they may decline your coverage or increase your monthly premium based on your health history.

Applying for Medicare Supplement under 65

Although insurance companies are not required to sell Medicare supplement plans to people under the age of sixty five,  some plans do offer these types of plans. Depending on the state there may be a Medicare Open Enrollment Period offered to Medicare Beneficiaries under the age of 65. Usually to be eligible for Medicare under the age of 65, individuals will either be disabled or have a serious health condition. In many cases Medicare Supplement plans are able to calculate this into the price for their Medicare Supplement Plans.

Alternate times to enroll into Medicare

If you are already outside of your initial 6 month period when you first became eligible for Medicare you are still able to apply for a Medicare Supplement plan.  Additionally you may still be eligible for enrollment without restrictions or “Guaranteed Issue”.  This is usually the case if:

  • Fraud was committed by your Medicare Supplement plan or they mislead you
  • Your Medicare Supplement plan went Bankrupt
  • You used your “Trial Right” to drop your Medicare supplement plan to try a Medicare Advantage plan and the returned in less than a year
  • Your existing Medicare Supplement plan stopped providing coverage in your area
  • You moved out of your Medicare Advantage Plans Service Area
