Social Security & Retirement: Social Security Disability Insurance Explained (SSDI)

Social Security Disability (SSDI) recipients are the second largest group of people receiving Social Security benefits, after retired workers and their survivors . These individuals who are sufficiently disabled and have met the minimum work criteria, are able to apply for Social Security Disability (SSDI) to receive monthly benefits. This program has 8.5 million people on it who are receiving monthly benefits because they are disabled to the point that they are unable to work. SSDI has some complex rules and eligibility requirements in order to receive the benefits, but for those people who are disabled and their families, it is a life saver.
