How to Renew Medi-Cal Benefits?
Medi-Cal Health Coverage Renewal
Medi-Cal is the California health program for low income individuals. There is generally low or no cost coverage and it must be renewed every year. Each year Medi-Cal recipients will be mailed a renewal packet. The forms in the packet must be reviewed and filled out with current household and income information. Then the forms must be returned to Medi-Cal to ensure that coverage continues for the household.
How to Renew Medi-Cal Insurance?
In California, most Medi-Cal recipients will have their plans renewed automatically based on information obtained by their local county from internal government sources. This can be information about income, tax, immigration, and other information necessary to verify eligibility for the Medi-Cal program.
There are some households who may have to verify their information manually. This will happen if the county you live in is unable to verify any of the essential information about your household. If this happens the county will send you a letter with a request to verify your most current household information. Once you complete the form and return it, the county will use the information to verify your household’s eligibility.
If these forms are not returned to the county in the allotted amount of time , your Medi-Cal coverage may be terminated for you or your dependents. If this is the case you will be sent a notice to inform you that you will have 90 days to contact the county with the requested information to get your existing Medi-Cal case reinstated.
In the case that your household or income information has changed substantially and you are no longer eligible for Medi-Cal you will be able to enroll into a Covered California Health Insurance plan up to 60 days after your Medi-Cal coverage is terminated. Additionally if you miss the 60 day window you may apply under other life changes that qualify you to enroll, or during the Covered California Open Enrollment Period. The Covered California Open Enrollment Period starts November 1st and runs through January 31.
It is important to understand that the state of California still has a penalty for Californians who are not enrolled into health insurance. If your health coverage through Medi-Cal is terminated and you do not re-enroll you may be subject to the health insurance penalty for 2021.
