How to apply for Covered California?

Covered California is the ACA health exchange for the state of California. Californians are able to apply for private health insurance or Medi-Cal through one single application. The application process can be difficult and at times consuming if you are not sure about how the program works. Who can apply for Covered California?

Covered California is a program for Californinas. In order to apply you must be a resident of California, also be a US citizen, legal resident or on some long term visas. Unfortunately undocumented indivduals are not able to apply for Covered California, this included DACA. But they may be able to apply for Medi-Cal. We can assist with applications for both. 

When should you apply?

Most people enroll into Covered California during the annual open enrollment period which happens every year from November 1st through January 31st. During this time you can enroll, shop for alternate plans or make updates to your existing coverage. Outside of the OEP you may be able to apply for a Covered California plan if you have a life change that Qualifies you for a Special Enrollment period. If you do not have a life change you will not likely be able to apply for a Covered California Plan outside of the Open Enrollment Period. If you are not sure about applying, contact our Covered California Enrollment Center and we can discuss some of the Special Enrollment Periods you may be eligible for. 

What information is needed to apply?

Applying for a Covered California plan will require some personal and financial information. In general you will need : 

  • Personal information: names, dates of birth, social security numbers, immigration documentation and tax information
  • Additionally you will need to have a list of doctors and medication that you or your family are currently using

Who is eligible for Covered California?

Most people who apply for Covered California are eligible for some level of plan. The factors that change the type of plan somebody is eligible for are : 

  • Citizenship
  • Income
  • Household Size 
  • Availability of other health coverage from outside of Covered California

How much is Covered California ?

Once your application is submitted, you will receive two letters. One from Covered California that may ask for more information if necessary and the second will be from the insurance carrier that you enrolled into. In the welcome letter there will be a bill and a list of options to make your payments directly to the insurance company. Covered California does not accept payments or provide health coverage directly. 

Important information

When you submit an application through Covered California, the exchange will cross check your information with the information that is available in their systems. If information like income, household size, or citizenship is different from what is present in the internal Covered California database they may request that you submit verification of the information to Covered California. This can be done by mail, fax, through your account or by coming into one of our Covered California Enrollment Centers.
