Covered California Silver Plans: The Plan Levels that Fit Best for Most People

The most popular plans people choose on Covered California are the silver level plans. They are most often the middle-ground plan that provides the most coverage for the least amount of money. The reasonable premiums, lower deductibles, and additional support from Covered California for day-to-day medical services is what usually makes the silver plans the best options for Californians searching for a balanced health insurance plan.  Is a Covered California Silver Plan Right for me?

The Silver plan is the best plan for:

  •  Somebody who utilizes doctors visits, x-rays, and specialist visits ,or  takes  prescription medications
  • Somebody who is average or good health
  • A person or family who wants to have lower copays for routine medical services

The Silver plan is not for every type of consumer:

  • The silver rate is more expensive than the lower cost Covered California Health Insurance plans (Bronze and Catastrophic plans).
  • If somebody knows they will be having very large healthcare costs ,like surgeries, transplants or long term health procedures, it may be better to choose a higher level Covered California plan that has lower costs when using medical services.

Different types of Silver plans

There are 4 different levels of the Covered California Silver plan. There is the Silver 70 , Silver 73 , Silver 84 and the Silver 94. The plans vary based on a person’s annual income. The lower the income somebody has the better “Enhanced Silver Plan” they are eligible to receive. Not everybody will qualify for all the silver plans. Only people with the lowest income will be eligible for the plan with the highest level of support (the Silver 94 plan). Normally all the Enhanced Silver plans start when somebody’s income is below 250 % of the Federal Poverty Level.

More Consideration

Based on your income you may qualify for one of these Silver Enhanced Plans ( Silver 94, Silver 87, Silver 73) . Make sure to look at the plan benefits and understand them before you make a choice. With these Enhanced Silver plans you will get lower deductibles, Copays and out of pocket maximums costs, especially when compared to other metal level plans.

Another consideration is, if you are choosing a PPO plan it is very important to understand that there are actually two sets of prices for medical services. The first is if you go to a doctor who is contracted directly with your health insurance company, for the plan you are enrolled into. This doctor is considered “in network”. But if your doctor is not directly contracted with the insurance plan you are enrolled into, they will be considered “out of Network”. In this case you will be charged a higher rate for your medical services.

If your income and household size  are within the eligibility range, then you will get the Silver Cost Sharing Measures, which will mean improved benefits. This is even the case if your income is too high or when you initially apply but by the end of the year your income has changed and puts you into the subsidy range. Only if you apply for your health insurance plan through Covered California, can you get any subsidy you missed during the year, back on your tax return. If you have insurance coverage directly through an insurance company you will not be eligible for tax credit at the end of the year.
