Covered California Gold 80 Plan

Enrolling in the Gold 80 level Covered California plan is usually recommended for people who either have above average healthcare costs or prefer to have lower copays and deductibles when they go to the doctor.

The Gold 80  plan offers good out of pocket costs for your normal day-to-day medical services. This would include things like doctors visits which are only a $35 copay or specialist doctors visits that are only a $65 copay.  Additionally, generic medications are set to a $15 copay and your lab work set at $40 and x-rays are a $75 copay. Aside from the lower copays, the most important aspect of the Gold 80 plan is that maximum money somebody can spend per year if something medically expensive happens. Something like a heart attack, cancer, or surgery. These types of medical costs, without health coverage, can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. With the Gold  plan though, there is no initial deductible to satisfy and your yearly cost is limited to $8,200 for a single person and $16,400 for a family. This is compared to the higher priced plans like platinum which have out of pocket maximums as high as $4500 for a single person or $9000 for a family, or lower priced plans like Silver 70 who have a deductible of $4000 you have to pay first.  If you are interested in seeing more information for the Gold 80 plan through Covered California , please feel free to visit our website www.enrollsocal.com for more information or contact us directly at 844-367-655. How can you Qualify for a Gold 80 Plan?

More often than not people who apply for the Gold 80 plan are looking for a plan that has no deductible and low copays but are willing to pay more monthly for it. You may apply through Covered California for the Gold 80 plan or may be able to apply outside of Covered California directly with the insurance carrier. But if you apply outside of Covered California you will not be eligible for any premium assistance. The income range for eligibility into the Gold 80 plan is between 138% of the Federal Poverty level (FPL) and up, there is no top limit to your income for the Gold 80 plan.  But if your income is above 600% FPL you will not be eligible for either state or federal subsidy. If you are a child or have children under the age of 18 then they will not be eligible for the Gold 80 unless the household income is above 266% of FPL. If the income is below 266% FPL then the children will be eligible for free health insurance through Medi-Cal. We can assist with Medi-Cal enrollments as well.

Is the Gold 80 plan good for you?

If you are somebody who prefers to have lower copays and deductibles and are willing to pay higher monthly premiums the Gold 80 plan will work well for you. It is a plan that has better than average costs for medical services. It has lower  cost for healthcare and is well suited for people who plan to use higher than usual medical services during the year.

Extra Considerations

One thing to keep in mind with the Gold 80 plan is that the plan is designed for people who have above average healthcare costs. But it also means you have to pay more monthly to ensure your usage costs are lower. So, if you are relatively healthy and just need health coverage to avoid the California Health Insurance penalty, or just need it for checkups, the Silver 70 or Bronze 60 plan may be a better option to look at. Additionally if your income fluctuates and it goes down during the year then you may be able to qualify for an Enhanced Silver plan that may actually have better benefits than your Gold 80 plan but for a lower cost.

Another important consideration is, if you are choosing a PPO plan it is particularly important to understand that there are actually two sets of prices for medical services. The first is if you go to a doctor who is contracted directly with your health insurance company, for the plan you are enrolled into. This doctor is considered “in network”. But if your doctor is not directly contracted with the insurance plan you are enrolled into, they will be considered “out of Network”. In this case you will be charged a higher rate for your medical services.
