Every year starting in February our offices get inundated with people asking for their tax form 1095A. This form is proof from the health exchange that somebody received financial assistance during the year, how much and for how long. What is a 1095A ? 

The 1095A is a form that is produced by the ACA health exchanges for anybody who had health insurance through the exchange. This form is needed at the time when you file your taxes for a couple reasons. The first is that it proves that you had health coverage and allows you to avoid the state  penalty for not having health coverage. Additionally it shows how much financial assistance that you received throughout the year. Your tax person will use this form to create another form, Form 8962 which will be necessary to justify your income with how much subsidy you received during the year. 

When is the 1095A sent out? 

1095A forms are usually sent out in the beginning of each year for the previous year. 1095As begin getting sent out January 31 but may be sent much later. Especially if there are corrected or multiple 1095A forms available

How to get form 1095A?

There are a variety of ways to get a 1095A. Normally they should be sent out to any Covered California member starting in late January by mail. But it is common that people misplace it, lose it, or it doesn’t get one sent out. In these cases you have a few options to get a copy of your 1095A. The first and best way is to work with a Covered California Certified Enrollment Agency (like ours) who is able to retrieve , print , fax or email this form directly to you. This can be done by contacting one of our California Storefronts by calling 844-367-6555 , walking in or visiting our website (www.EnrollSocal.com). The next way is to request a duplicate from Covered California but they are only able to send them by mail and it may take up to 45 days to receive it. The last way is to log into your Covered California account online and download it. 

1095A Errors 

Although it is uncommon, there are times you may receive a 1095A that has the wrong information on it. This can be the wrong amount of months, household sizes or financial assistance. This can be fixed with a 1095a Dispute form that is available. Once you submit the form then Covered California will review the account and resend you a corrected 1095A if appropriate.
